Number the Pages of a PDF

Your Original Content Is Preserved
The tool loads your PDF and draws the numbers on top of the existing pages. It does not rasterise anything, rebuild pages or re-encode images — the text stays selectable, links keep working, and the file keeps its original quality.
The result is a new file. Your original is untouched on your device, so you can always go back to it.
Skipping a Cover Page
Set 'start on page' to 2 and the first page is left blank while numbering begins on the second. This is the usual treatment for a report with a title page.
The two settings do different jobs. 'Start on page' controls which page gets the first number; 'first number' controls what that number says. Setting them to 2 and 1 gives an unnumbered cover followed by a page labelled 1.
When the format is 'Page N of M', the M counts only the pages that are actually numbered, so a skipped cover does not leave you with 'Page 1 of 12' on the second page of an eleven-page sequence.
Position and Legibility
Bottom centre is the safest default and the convention for most documents. Bottom right suits documents that will be printed single-sided and flipped through, since the number sits where a thumb naturally lands.
Check the margin setting against your document's own margins. If the number lands on top of existing content, increase the edge margin or move it to the opposite corner — the preview shows roughly where it will sit.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?+
No. The file is read and modified entirely in your browser. It never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
Does adding numbers change the rest of the document?+
No. The numbers are drawn on top of the existing pages. Text stays selectable, images are not re-encoded, and links continue to work.
Can I skip the cover page?+
Yes. Set 'start on page' to 2. Page one is left unnumbered and numbering begins on page two. Use 'first number' to choose what that page is labelled.
Can I start from a number other than 1?+
Yes. Set any starting number, which is useful when a document continues from a previous volume or section.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?+
Only if the PDF is not encrypted. An encrypted file cannot be read in the browser and the tool will tell you rather than producing a broken result.
What if the number overlaps my content?+
Increase the edge margin, reduce the font size, or move the number to a different position. The preview gives an approximate placement before you generate.
