Why Character Limits Matter
Many platforms cut text off at a fixed character count rather than a word count. A meta description is usually truncated by Google somewhere around 155–160 characters, a page title around 60. Social posts, SMS messages and marketplace product titles all impose their own hard limits.
Characters excluding spaces is the count most often used for translation quotes and some academic requirements, while characters including spaces is what nearly every platform limit refers to. Both are shown here so you do not have to guess which one applies.
How Reading Time Is Estimated
Reading time uses 225 words per minute, a common estimate for an adult reading ordinary prose silently. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, roughly the pace of clear presentation delivery.
Treat both as estimates. Dense technical writing is read more slowly than a casual blog post, and a presenter who pauses for questions will take considerably longer than the number shown.
How Each Statistic Is Counted
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, so hyphenated terms like 'state-of-the-art' count once, and words in non-Latin scripts are counted normally rather than ignored.
A sentence is counted at each full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, including when a closing quotation mark follows. Because abbreviations such as 'Dr.' and decimal numbers also contain full stops, the sentence count is an estimate rather than an exact figure.
A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by a blank line. Single line breaks within a block do not start a new paragraph, which matches how most writing tools behave.

Is my text uploaded or saved?+
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server, never stored, and disappears when you close the tab.
Does the word count match Microsoft Word?+
For ordinary prose it matches closely, because both split on whitespace. Small differences can appear with unusual punctuation, footnote markers or text pasted from a PDF.
Are spaces counted as characters?+
Both counts are shown. 'Characters' includes spaces, which is what social platforms and meta description limits mean. 'Characters (no spaces)' excludes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks.
How is reading time calculated?+
Word count divided by 225 words per minute for silent reading, and by 130 words per minute for reading aloud. Both are averages, so use them as a guide rather than an exact figure.
Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?+
There is no fixed limit. Counting is fast even for long documents, though extremely large pastes — hundreds of thousands of words — may feel slower on an older phone.
Does it count emoji and accented characters correctly?+
Yes. Emoji are counted as a single character rather than two, and accented or non-Latin words are counted as words rather than skipped.
