Choosing a Quality Setting

For JPEG and WebP, quality between 70 and 80 usually produces a file a fraction of the original size with no difference most people can see. Below about 50 you start to see blocky patches in smooth areas like skies and skin.

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial — it stores every pixel exactly. That makes it the right choice for logos, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or transparency, but a poor choice for photographs, where JPEG or WebP will be far smaller.

If a file is already compressed, re-encoding it can make it slightly larger rather than smaller. When that happens the tool says so instead of pretending it saved you space.

Resizing Is Usually the Bigger Win

The fastest way to shrink a photo is to stop it being larger than it needs to be. A 4000-pixel-wide camera photo displayed in a 800-pixel column is carrying five times more detail than anyone will ever see.

The resize slider scales the image while preserving its aspect ratio, so nothing is stretched. If you need an exact width and height, or want to process several images at once, the image resizer is the better tool.

Transparency and Format Changes

PNG and WebP can store transparent areas; JPEG cannot. If you compress a transparent image to JPEG, those areas have to be filled with a solid colour.

Rather than doing that silently, the tool detects real transparency in your image and warns you before it happens, so a logo with a see-through background does not come back with an unexpected white or black box around it.

Are my images uploaded to a server?+

No. The image is decoded and re-encoded in your browser. It never leaves your device, and nothing is stored.

How much smaller will my image get?+

It depends on the source. A photo straight from a phone camera often drops by 70–90% at quality 75 with no visible difference. An image that has already been compressed may barely shrink at all — the tool shows the real figure either way.

Which format gives the smallest file?+

WebP is usually smallest for both photos and graphics, and it supports transparency. JPEG is a close second for photographs and has the widest compatibility. PNG produces the largest files but keeps every pixel exactly.

Will compressing reduce the image dimensions?+

Not unless you move the resize slider. By default the pixel dimensions stay exactly the same and only the encoding changes.

Why did my PNG get bigger after compressing?+

PNG is lossless, so re-encoding cannot discard detail — and the browser's encoder may store the same pixels less efficiently than the original tool did. For photographs, switch the output format to JPEG or WebP.

Is there a file size limit?+

There is no fixed limit, but very large images use browser memory. If a photo of 50 megapixels or more fails, resizing it first will let it through.
