Which Format Should You Choose?
JPG is the right choice for photographs. It produces small files and is accepted everywhere, but it cannot store transparency and discards a little detail each time it is saved.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it correct for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with hard edges or flat colour. The trade-off is much larger files for photographic content.
WebP is usually smaller than both at the same visual quality and supports transparency, which makes it the best default for the web. Support is now near-universal in browsers, though some older desktop software and a few marketplace upload forms still reject it.
Converting Transparent Images to JPG
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency cannot survive the conversion. Something has to be painted behind the image, and browsers do not agree on what — some fill with black, which is why a transparent logo converted elsewhere sometimes comes back with a black box around it.
This tool checks whether your image genuinely uses transparency, and if it does, asks you to pick the replacement colour before converting. White, black and light grey are offered, plus a custom colour picker.
If you want to keep the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead — both store it correctly.
What Conversion Does Not Do
Converting to a lossless format cannot restore detail that was already lost. A JPG saved at low quality has permanently discarded information; turning it into a PNG preserves the artefacts at a larger file size rather than repairing them.
Converting also strips metadata such as EXIF camera information and GPS coordinates, because the image is redrawn from its pixels. That is often useful for privacy, but worth knowing if you rely on that data.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?+
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. The file never reaches a server and nothing is stored.
Does converting change the image dimensions?+
No. The width and height are preserved exactly. If you want to change dimensions, use the image resizer or the compressor's resize slider.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?+
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. The tool detects transparency and lets you choose that colour rather than picking one unpredictably.
Will converting improve my image quality?+
No. Conversion cannot recover detail that has already been discarded. Converting a low-quality JPG to PNG preserves the existing artefacts in a larger file.
Is EXIF and location data removed?+
Yes. The image is redrawn from its pixels, so camera settings, timestamps and GPS coordinates are not carried into the converted file.
Can I convert HEIC, GIF or SVG files?+
Not currently. The tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP, which the browser can decode and encode reliably. Animated GIF and SVG need different handling to convert honestly, so they are not offered rather than being silently mishandled.
